The Immigration and Citizenship Service office in Mekelle has officially resumed its full range of operations, including the introduction of online passport services, after being closed for three years due to the Tigray conflict.
The office had initially reintroduced limited services, such as passport renewals and replacements, on June 18, 2024, following a complete suspension of activities in November 2020 due to the onset of the war.
Mitiku Takele, the coordinator of the Mekelle branch, informed state media that the office is now offering online-assisted services for both new passport applications and renewals. He indicated that residents throughout the region can apply online, provided they meet the necessary criteria.
Nevertheless, he emphasized that individuals applying for new passports are still required to visit the office in person to submit essential documents, including a letter from the local administration and a birth certificate.
Mitiku also mentioned that the staff at the office are well-prepared to assist customers in efficiently completing their online applications during their visits.
The introduction of online services has been positively received by residents, who previously had to travel to Addis Ababa for passport-related issues.
