The MTN Group has announced the appointment of Mohammed Rufai as the chief executive officer (CEO) of MTN Congo-Brazzaville, alongside Ayham Moussa, who will assume the role of chief operating officer (COO) of MTN Nigeria.
Rufai is set to begin his tenure as CEO of MTN
Congo-Brazzaville on September 1, while Moussa will commence his new
responsibilities on August 19, 2024.
With over 24 years of experience in the information and
communications technology (ICT) field, Rufai boasts a remarkable history in the
telecommunications industry.
He joined MTN Nigeria in 2002 and later transitioned to MTN
Ghana, where he was appointed chief technology officer (CTO) in 2015.
Currently, Rufai holds the position of CTO at MTN Nigeria
and has occupied various senior roles within the MTN Group, including regional
chief technology and information officer (CTIO) for Southeast Africa and Ghana.
Additionally, he is a member of the boards of Bayobab and
MTN Benin.
“A driven leader, Mohammed is passionate about execution
excellence, people development, and customer experience,” said MTN.
Rufai possesses a degree in computer science along with
certifications in both advanced management and general management.
Additionally, MTN has announced the voluntary early
retirement of Djibril Ouattara, the CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire, and the departure
of Hassan Jabbar, the COO of MTN Nigeria.
Rufai will assume Moussa’s role at MTN Congo-Brazzaville,
while Moussa is set to take over Jabbar's position. Ayham became part of the
MTN Group in 2002, took a short break, and rejoined in 2006.
Throughout his tenure, he has held various positions across
different markets, including Syria and Guinea-Conakry. His senior positions
have encompassed chief information officer, CTIO, and CEO of MTN
Congo-Brazzaville.
“In his technology roles, Ayham played a key role in the
country’s digital evolution from 2G to 4G, establishing MTN Congo-Brazzaville
as a technology leader,” said the MTN Group.
“As CEO, Ayham expanded MTN Congo’s leadership and business
health, accelerating growth, margins, and operational excellence, while
fostering strong relationships with various local stakeholders.”
MTN Group's President and Chief Executive Officer, Ralph
Mupita, expressed his gratitude to Ouattara for his valuable contributions
during his nine years of dedicated service to the company.
Furthermore, Mupita extended his appreciation to Jabbar for
his significant contributions to the group’s success over the past 22 years.
“On behalf of the MTN Group Board and Group Exco, I wish
both Djibril and Hassan well in their future endeavours,” Rupita said.
“I also congratulate Ayham and Mohammed on their
appointments and wish them success in their new roles.”
