The National Universities Commission has asserted that Open Distance Learning is both economical and appropriate for various educational environments.

A statement released by Miva Open University indicated that it conducted a public lecture examining the transformative impact of Open Distance Learning in Nigeria at the National Universities Commission Headquarters located in Maitama, Abuja.

Miva, an open university accredited by the National Universities Commission, provides a diverse array of academic programs to students globally.

In a speech delivered by the Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, titled, ‘The Changing Role of University Administration in an Open Distance Learning Setting,’ he illustrated the significant opportunities presented by the digital era.

He remarked, “This cost-effective educational approach transcends time and location, making it suitable for a variety of educational contexts, including Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, vocational, and non-formal education.”

The essence of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is characterized by its flexibility and learner-centered approach, transcending the conventional confines of traditional classrooms. This model promotes accessibility to education, effectively eliminating barriers between learners and educators.

He enumerated the advantages of ODL in tackling the educational challenges faced by Nigeria, asserting, "ODL provides us with the opportunity to bridge the significant gap between the demand for and supply of educational resources. Statistics indicate that nearly two million Nigerian children apply for university admission annually, yet the combined capacity of the 274 universities is only between 500,000 and 700,000, which is insufficient. We aspire to expand access through ODL, ensuring that a greater number of individuals can pursue university education."

Former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Emeritus Julius Okojie, discussed the potential of ODL to democratize education. Dr. Nuel Salihu, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the NUC, elaborated on the commission's support for ODL initiatives.

Professor Tayo Arulogun, Vice-Chancellor of Miva Open University, emphasized the institution's dedication to technology-enhanced higher education. Chancellor Sim Shagaya addressed the transformative role of technology in higher education, highlighting the necessity of fostering healthy competition and collaboration among educators.

"As stewards of our society's future, we must strive to develop a qualitative, robust, and dynamic tertiary education system," he remarked, underscoring the importance of being receptive to change and constructive feedback, and continuously improving our practices. The Registrar, Iheanyi Akwitti, also provided insights into Miva's ODL programs.
