The World Bank has shown a keen interest in partnering with Nigeria to advance the development of its Marine and Blue Economy sector, with a particular emphasis on sustainable fisheries.

During a recent courtesy visit to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, Ms. Lia Sieghart, the leader of the World Bank delegation, underscored the bank’s commitment to supporting the ministry’s vision for a sustainable and integrated Blue Economy, focusing specifically on fisheries.

Ms. Sieghart commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the establishment of the ministry, interpreting it as a clear indication of Nigeria’s dedication to the sustainable development of its marine resources. “We are here to engage in discussions regarding the government’s vision for a sustainable and integrated Blue Economy and fisheries sector, and to identify ways in which the World Bank can provide expertise and support,” she remarked.

In reply, Minister Oyetola assured the World Bank team that fisheries are a primary focus for the ministry, with substantial initiatives underway to regulate the industry and create designated fishing terminals. He highlighted the necessity of developing sustainable fisheries that not only engage the youth but also enhance local production and decrease dependency on imports.

“Fisheries are the cornerstone of our ministry. We are committed to regulating activities within this sector. We are establishing terminals for fishing operations and aim to implement a sustainable fishery program that resonates with the youth. Our objective is to minimize imports and promote local production in Nigeria. Thus, we welcome your support in realizing this vision,” Oyetola expressed.

He also updated the World Bank team on the ministry’s initiatives to map Nigeria’s marine resources as part of its comprehensive strategy for Blue Economy development.

The meeting featured prominent officials, including Oloruntola Olufemi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; Babatunde Bombata, the Director of Maritime Safety and Security; and Prof. Busayo Fakinlede, the Technical Aide to the Minister. They all emphasized the ministry's dedication to establishing fisheries as a fundamental element of Nigeria's Blue Economy.
