Ethiopian airlines takes a strategic step in regional aviation through a collaborative partnership with South Sudan for the establishment of a national carrier

In a significant move aimed at bolstering regional connectivity and catalyzing economic growth, Ethiopian Airlines has forged a management agreement with the government of South Sudan to establish and operate a national airline. This strategic partnership was solidified during high-level discussions between South Sudan's Minister of Transport, Madut Biar, and Ethiopian Ambassador Nabil Mahdi in Juba. Building upon the framework established by the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), this collaboration seeks to revitalize and transform South Sudan's aviation sector.

Since its independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan has faced challenges in establishing a national airline, primarily due to ongoing political instability and civil unrest. Previous attempts to launch a national carrier have been consistently obstructed. This new agreement presents a pivotal opportunity for South Sudan, as Ethiopian Airlines brings its vast experience and leadership in the African aviation industry.

The collaboration is also aligned with the Yamoussoukro Decision, a crucial treaty among African Union nations aimed at liberalizing air transport services and promoting fair competition. Ambassador Mahdi emphasized that Ethiopian Airlines is prepared to leverage its operational expertise, which will not only benefit South Sudan’s economy but also improve regional air connectivity, essential for both business and tourism.

The South Sudanese government has long recognized the potential advantages of a state-owned airline. In 2019, the South Sudanese parliament approved the idea of South Sudan Airways, but various challenges continued to impede progress. With Ethiopian Airlines' involvement, South Sudan will gain vital technical and managerial support for its airspace operations, which are currently in the process of transitioning from Sudanese oversight.

Transport Minister Biar conveyed a positive outlook regarding the collaboration, highlighting the "substantial advantages" that South Sudan can derive from Ethiopia's expertise in aviation. Ethiopian Airlines, recognized for its effective management of various national carriers across Africa, is anticipated to offer training to South Sudanese staff, paving the way for a sustainable future for the emerging airline.

The involvement of the Ethiopian national carrier in South Sudan reflects its strategic goal to spearhead regional collaborations and expand air networks within Africa. Following its recent achievements in acquiring interests in other national airlines on the continent, Ethiopian Airlines has established itself as a significant force in African aviation, now presenting South Sudan with an opportunity to enter the aviation sector under experienced and stable management.

As this partnership develops, South Sudan is likely to experience enhanced economic integration, job opportunities, and improved infrastructure—essential components for development in a post-conflict context. For Ethiopian Airlines, this initiative represents another milestone in reinforcing its status as a leading aviation entity in Africa, fostering connectivity and economic advancement throughout the continent.
