Mikel Arteta stated on Tuesday that winning the League Cup could serve as a catalyst for further success as he marks five years at the helm of Arsenal this week. The Spaniard secured the FA Cup in his inaugural season in 2020, but the club has not added to its trophy collection since, despite coming close on several occasions.

Currently, Arsenal sits third in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Liverpool, having played one more match. They are set to face Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday, followed by another match against the same team in the league just three days later.

Arteta expressed his desire for additional silverware, including the more prestigious trophies, emphasizing that a successful cup run can generate momentum. “I firmly believe that winning and progressing to the next round creates a different atmosphere around the team, which is why these matches are incredibly significant,” he remarked.

The 42-year-old highlighted that clinching the League Cup would provide a significant boost for the club, which has not lifted the Premier League trophy since 2004.

“It brings belief, trust, positive energy,” he said.

“Touching a cup, beating someone in the semi-final, beating someone in the final, it generates that energy.

“And I think it creates that right path to go and do something else, especially because of the timing and when the competition is played in this country, it gets the momentum going.”

The League Cup final is scheduled to take place at Wembley on March 16 next year. When asked about the possibility of making significant changes for Wednesday’s match, Arteta indicated he would “determine the best team to secure victory” based on the squad's condition and the importance of the quarter-final match.

“We’ll decide that in the morning in relation to how the squad is, obviously the relevance of the match and where we are in the quarter-finals, it becomes a very important match,” he said.
