At its 117th meeting, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Governing Council resolved to dissolve the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN) Executive Committee, headed by Israel Jaiye-Opayemi, citing concerns about tenure and performance.

The resolution, ratified at the meeting on December 19, 2024, was formally announced in a press release signed by Stanley Ogadigo, NIPR’s Director of Public Relations. The statement emphasized the necessity of aligning PRCAN with the strategic objectives of the parent institute.

PRCAN, established under NIPR Bye-law No. 3 of 1993, serves as the regulatory authority for public relations consultancy in Nigeria. However, the NIPR has raised issues regarding its effectiveness, asserting that the dissolution is crucial for revitalizing the association and ensuring adherence to modern governance and professional standards.

To ensure a smooth transition, the NIPR Council, under the leadership of Dr. Ike Neliagu, has established a Revitalization Committee. This committee will oversee PRCAN's operations and conduct elections for new leadership by April 30, 2025. The committee will be chaired by Dr. Nkechi Ali-Balogun, a NIPR Fellow and prominent figure in Nigeria's public relations field. Additional members include seasoned professionals such as Barr. Karibi George, fnipr; Dr. Ahmad Sajoh, fnipr; Hajia Lami Tumaka, fnipr; Mr. Chido Nwakanma, mnipr; and others. Dr. Dare Ogunyombo, mnipr, will serve as Member/Secretary.

In its announcement, NIPR confirmed that the outgoing PRCAN President, Mr. Israel Jaiye Opayemi, fnipr, has been informed of this decision through a formal letter dated December 21, 2024. The NIPR expressed appreciation for his contributions to PRCAN and requested his cooperation during the transition phase.
