SMEDAN Director-General Dr. Charles Odii announced a planned collaboration with Rolling Energy to convert 100,000 vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) within 18 months. This initiative, launched Friday at a new Abuja CNG Conversion and Training Center, will prioritize support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

SMEDAN, Rolling Energy, and Pi-CNG are collaborating on this initiative. Dr. Odii emphasized that this new center will facilitate cost-effective and environmentally friendly conversion of vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG), a superior alternative to traditional fuels.

The center's capacity to convert nine vehicles daily, supported by a specialized team of twenty technicians, will enable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to reduce transportation costs and meet evolving energy needs.

Furthermore, the center will offer comprehensive training to young Nigerians in compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion, maintenance, and repair, thereby fostering the development of essential skills and generating new entrepreneurial opportunities.

Dr. Odii indicated that the Pi-CNG initiative targets the conversion of approximately one million vehicles within the next 18 months, with SMEDAN pledging to convert 10 percent of this total at its facilities.

He further noted that this project aligns with SMEDAN’s GROW Nigerian strategy, which is dedicated to offering SMEs Guidance, Resources, Opportunities, and Workforce Support.

"By transitioning to CNG, we are enabling SMEs to reduce costs while fostering sustainable energy practices," he remarked, highlighting the initiative's relevance amid rising fuel prices due to subsidy removals.

SMEDAN is also focused on enhancing access to essential infrastructure for SMEs by upgrading Industrial Development Centres nationwide to provide affordable tools and energy tailored to the requirements of small businesses.

California's Secretary of Transportation, Toks Omishakin, commended Nigeria's adoption of cleaner energy sources such as CNG, while advocating for a broader strategic focus on sustainable, long-term renewable energy solutions. He noted a substantial potential for collaborative efforts between California and Nigeria in developing renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, and hydrogen.

Executive Vice Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Toyin Zubair, commended SMEDAN and other contributing parties for their diligent efforts. He emphasized the strategic importance of harnessing Nigeria's substantial natural gas reserves to drive economic expansion.

Zubair stated that leveraging this globally significant resource for domestic transportation and industrial applications will reduce costs and promote environmental sustainability.

Rolling Energy CEO Mr. Mubarak Danbatta detailed the conversion process, highlighting its emphasis on safety and cost-effectiveness to ensure accessibility for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

He stated that a complete CNG vehicle refueling costs under N4,000, compared to over N60,000 for gasoline, providing substantial cost savings for businesses. He further emphasized that CNG is not a luxury but a practical option for all, and that this initiative is undertaken in collaboration with SMEDAN and Pi-CNG to specifically benefit SMEs.
