Ronwen Williams, goalkeeper for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, was the star of the CAF Awards, earning the prestigious Men's Interclub Player and Goalkeeper of the Year awards at a ceremony held Monday evening at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakesh, Morocco.

Williams received both accolades, though Ademola Lookman of Atalanta and Nigeria was named Player of the Year.

Zambia's Barbra Banda was honored as the women's player of the year.

The goalkeeper played a crucial role in Sundowns' 1-0 victory over Raja Casablanca in a Champions League group stage match at Loftus on Sunday, overcoming strong contenders to claim his two awards.

In the men’s interclub player category, Williams triumphed over Ahmed Zizo of Zamalek and Hussein El Shahat of Al Ahly, while in the goalkeeper of the year category, he was favored over Andre Onana of Cameroon and Yahia Fofana of Ivory Coast.

Williams showcased his skills by saving four penalties during the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) quarterfinal against Cape Verde and maintained five clean sheets throughout the tournament.

This year, he was also nominated for the Yashin Trophy, marking him as the first South African player to receive a nomination for a Ballon d'Or award.

He contributed to Sundowns' seventh consecutive Betway Premiership title, setting a record by conceding only 11 goals in 30 matches, and played a part in qualifying for the 2025 Afcon, which will take place in Morocco.

In other South African categories, Bafana coach Hugo Broos was edged out by Emerse Faé, who guided Ivory Coast to Afcon victory on home soil, while Andile Dlamini lost to Chiamaka Nnadozie of Paris FC.

Sundowns were defeated by Champions League winners Al Ahly for the club of the year award, and Bafana was outperformed by Ivory Coast for the team of the year title.
