As the fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia has previously indicated its intention to join BRICS to bolster the influence of emerging nations and promote the interests of the Global South.
Brazil, which will assume the presidency of the bloc in 2025, confirmed that the member states reached a consensus on Indonesia's membership as part of a broader expansion initiative that was initially endorsed during the 2023 summit in Johannesburg.
The South American country highlighted that Indonesia's application received approval in 2023, but the Asian nation formally requested to join after the presidential election last year, with President Prabowo Subianto taking office in October.
According to the Brazilian government, "Indonesia aligns with the other members in advocating for reforms in global governance institutions and plays a constructive role in enhancing cooperation within the Global South."
The BRICS coalition also comprises Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
