The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has launched a new initiative aimed at reducing the delays faced by candidates wishing to retake one or two subjects in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

John Kapi, WAEC's head of public affairs, announced that the initiative, called ‘WASSCE PC1,’ will enable students to re-sit specific subjects in January and February 2025, thereby eliminating the usual waiting period for the subsequent examination cycle.

This initiative is particularly beneficial for candidates in Ghana and several other West African nations, whose WAEC results were recently published, allowing them to retake their unsuccessful papers.

Kapi emphasized that this initiative represents a significant advancement for education in West Africa. “This initiative offers students a timely opportunity to improve their grades and maintain academic progression,” he said.

The head of public affairs at WAEC has outlined the registration process, indicating that students have until January 8, 2025, to register online through WAEC’s website or at accredited internet cafés. The examinations are scheduled to take place from January 24 to February 15, 2025.

The initial examinations will be held in regional capitals, as this first edition is anticipated to draw a relatively small number of candidates.

Kapi stressed that this strategy promotes both efficiency and accessibility for all participants.

“This initiative allows students to avoid a year-long academic delay,” he remarked, urging potential candidates to utilize the registration window.

In Nigeria, the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates is set for February 2025, with online registration for the first series closing on Monday, January 6, 2025.
