Actress and producer Issa Rae has become a member of the ownership group for Major League Soccer's expansion team, San Diego FC.

The team will begin its first season on February 23 against the reigning MLS champion, LA Galaxy. The primary ownership of the club is held by billionaire Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Tribe, marking the first time a Native American tribe has invested in a professional soccer franchise.

Rae joins a roster of partners that includes Manny Machado, third baseman for the San Diego Padres, and former Manchester United and Spanish national team player Juan Mata. Her investment was officially announced on Tuesday.

“Soccer is a universal language that has the power to bring people together, and I look forward to contributing to San Diego FC’s journey as we make history in MLS,” she stated.

Rae's partnership with San Diego FC also includes Pave Investments, a private African firm that previously led an investment group for NBA Africa. Pave Chairman Tunde Folawiyo and Founding Director Kwamena Afful are also joining the ownership group.

Rae is best known for her role in the HBO series “Insecure,” which she co-created and co-wrote. She has appeared in films such as “Barbie” and “The Hate U Give,” authored the memoir “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” and is a strong advocate for underrepresented communities and civil rights.
