The Lagos State Government has declared an eight-hour road closure and traffic diversion in anticipation of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, which is set to take place on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the State Commissioner for Transportation, announced this on Tuesday, indicating that the marathon will run from 5:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Osiyemi detailed that the marathon will start at the National Stadium in Surulere and will follow this route:

  • Ikorodu Road towards Anthony (Bertola)
  • Gbagada to the Third Mainland Bridge
  • Inbound Lagos Island via Dolphin Road
  • Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo Roundabout, and Bourdillon Road
  • Crossing the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge to Admiralty Way
  • Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola, and Ahmadu Bello Way, finishing at Eko Atlantic.

To ensure the safety of participants and restrict unauthorized access to the race corridor, adjacent roads, junctions, and intersections will be secured with concrete barriers. Traffic officials from LASTMA, NPF, FRSC, LSNC, and LAWMA will be deployed at key locations.

The following alternative routes have been established to facilitate smooth travel during the marathon:

  • From Ikeja: Take Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, connect to Eko Bridge, and proceed via Outer Marina.
  • From Badagry/Mile 2: Navigate through Apapa via Orile, link to Eko Bridge, and continue through Outer Marina.
  • From Surulere: Access the island via Iponri/Iganmu, connecting to Eko Bridge and Outer Marina.
  • From Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (Mowe and surrounding areas): Use the Ojota Slip Road, connect to Ikorodu Road, and continue through Funsho Williams Avenue to Eko Bridge.
  • From Okota: Utilize Mile 2/Orile, connecting to Eko Bridge and Outer Marina.
  • From Sango-Otta: Travel through Mushin, link to Funsho Williams Avenue, and proceed to Eko Bridge.
  • From Epe-Lekki Expressway (Ajah and nearby areas): Use Marwa Junction, connect to Admiralty Way, and cross the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.
  • From Lagos Island: Take a detour to Apongbon Bridge, then proceed to Eko Bridge, reaching Costain Roundabout, Iponri, and Bode Thomas.

Alternatively: Navigate through Victoria Island, connect to Independence Bridge, and continue via Apongbon to Ijora-Olopa and Herbert Macaulay Road.

The Third Mainland Bridge will be closed for traffic heading towards Lagos Island, but it will remain accessible for those traveling to the Mainland.

Osiyemi assured residents that traffic management personnel will be on-site to reduce disruptions and encouraged the public to plan their journeys in advance by utilizing alternative routes and other transportation methods.

He requested patience from the community, emphasizing that the partial and complete road closures are part of the traffic management strategy for the 10th Edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
