The Board of Trustees of Wigwe University has appointed Honourable Justice Amina Adamu Augie, CON, JSC (Rtd) as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, alongside Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi CEng, CTIP, FBCS, FIET, FIAP, SIEEE, who will serve as the Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

This announcement was made in a statement issued by Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, on Thursday, February 19, 2025. Prof. Ajogwu emphasized that these appointments reflect the university's dedication to fostering academic excellence, leadership, and innovation.

Honourable Justice Augie, CON, JSC (Rtd) will take over the role of Pro-Chancellor from Professor Julius Okojie, OON, the previous holder of the position. Meanwhile, Professor Al-Akaidi has been officially appointed as the Vice-Chancellor after previously serving in an acting capacity, as well as fulfilling the roles of Dean of the College of Science and Computing and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for research and innovation.

Honourable Justice Augie, CON, JSC (Rtd) is a highly respected jurist and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. She earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, in 1977 and became a barrister and solicitor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1978 after completing her studies at the Nigerian Law School. She later pursued a Master of Laws (LLM) in criminology at the University of Lagos from 1986 to 1987. Transitioning into academia, she began her career as an assistant lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University and served as a law lecturer at the Nigerian Law School from 1984 to 1988, where she taught evidence law.

In 1988, Honourable Justice Augie, CON, JSC (Rtd) embarked on her judicial career, steadily progressing through various judicial positions. She initially took on the role of Chief Magistrate within the Sokoto State Judiciary before being appointed as a Judge of the High Court in 1992, a position she maintained until her advancement to the Court of Appeal in 2002. During her fourteen years as a Justice of the Court of Appeal, she served in multiple divisions and ultimately ascended to the role of Presiding Justice. In 2016, she achieved the distinction of being appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court, becoming the sixth female Justice among 104 Justices in Nigeria. She is highly regarded for her steadfast integrity, perceptive rulings, and dedication to justice.

The Board recognized that her remarkable leadership, integrity, and extensive experience will be crucial in steering the University towards its strategic objectives while upholding its fundamental values of excellence, innovation, and service.

Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi (CEng, CITP, FBCS, FIET, FIAP, SIEEE) earned both his BSc and Master of Science degrees in Digital Communications Systems from Loughborough University (UK), later obtaining his doctorate from the same institution, focusing on Optical and Communications Engineering in 1988.

Professor Al-Akaidi is a prominent academic and forward-thinking leader. His vast experience in higher education, research, and innovation will significantly contribute to achieving the University’s mission and vision. He has been at the forefront of numerous educational innovations, including blended, online, and e-learning initiatives in the UK and MENA region, as well as the introduction of MOOCs in the Middle East, transforming access to education. 

He has supervised more than 45 PhD/MPhil candidates and over 100 MSc students. Furthermore, he has authored over 300 publications in esteemed international journals and conferences, served as Chief Editor for more than 7 international journals, and held editorial positions in over 40 international conferences. His career includes various roles in the UK and MENA region, such as Head of the School of Engineering & Technology, Dean of Computing, Vice President, and Provost.

The board states that his appointment signifies a new phase in the University’s commitment to promoting a culture of academic excellence, scientific innovation, and entrepreneurial initiative.
