Elon Musk’s Starlink has signed a strategic deal with Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator, to bring its satellite internet services to the world’s most populous country. The partnership intensifies competition with fellow billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, which has dominated India’s telecom sector.

The agreement allows Starlink to leverage Airtel’s extensive retail store network for distributing its devices across India, pending government approval to commence operations. Airtel announced on Tuesday that the two companies will explore using each other’s network infrastructure to enhance coverage, though specific details were not disclosed. Additionally, Airtel plans to offer Starlink services to its business and enterprise customers.

Starlink’s Long-Awaited Entry into India

The partnership follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Elon Musk in Washington, where they discussed collaboration in space, mobility, technology, and innovation. Starlink has been eager to launch in India but faced regulatory hurdles and competition from Reliance Jio, which has advocated for an auction-based allocation of satellite spectrum.

The Indian government, however, sided with Musk’s preference for administrative allocation of spectrum, aligning with global practices. Analysts suggest that an auction-based system, requiring significant investment, could deter foreign competitors like Starlink.

Rivalry with Reliance Jio

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, which has invested $19 billion in airwave auctions, has expressed concerns about losing broadband customers to Starlink. The satellite internet service could also pose a threat to Jio’s data and voice services in the future.

Reliance Jio and Eutelsat’s OneWeb have already secured approvals from India’s space regulator to launch commercial satellite broadband services. Airtel, meanwhile, has a similar distribution agreement with Eutelsat, in which its parent company holds a stake.

Implications for India’s Telecom Landscape

Starlink’s entry into India marks a significant shift in the country’s telecom sector, introducing a new player with advanced satellite internet technology. The partnership with Airtel not only strengthens Starlink’s distribution capabilities but also positions it to compete effectively with Reliance Jio and other established players.

As India continues to expand its digital infrastructure, the collaboration between Starlink and Airtel could accelerate internet access in remote and underserved areas, bridging the digital divide and fostering innovation in the country’s rapidly growing tech ecosystem.
