The drive for greater financial inclusion in Nigeria received a boost recently as HabariPay, the fintech subsidiary of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), announced the winners of its second annual Squad Hackathon. Themed 'Finclusion Revolution', the intensive three-day event brought together promising tech talent to develop practical solutions aimed at expanding access to financial services.

Held at the GTCO Training Complex, Tayo’s Plaza in Abeokuta, Squad Hackathon 2.0 challenged developers, designers, and strategists to utilize HabariPay's Squad APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to create impactful fintech applications. After rigorous development, pitching, and judging sessions, three teams emerged victorious, sharing a total prize pool of N10 million.

Team Savvy captured the grand prize of N5 million for their innovative solution, Splitwise. This platform addresses the common challenge of managing shared expenses, offering features to easily split costs, track group bills, and oversee collective finances, thereby simplifying financial collaboration among users.

Securing the first runner-up position and a N3 million prize was Team Farmceries. Their platform focuses on streamlining the agricultural supply chain by enabling the direct delivery of fresh farm produce to consumers. This innovation aims to enhance convenience for customers while potentially providing better market access for farmers.

Team TBD earned the N2 million third-place prize for Housify, a digital platform designed to simplify the residential rental process. By connecting prospective tenants with landlords and agents, Housify aims to make property searches, applications, and payment processes more efficient and user-friendly.

Beyond the competition, the hackathon served as a vibrant hub for learning and connection. Participants benefited from mentorship sessions led by industry experts, engaged in networking opportunities, and tackled demanding coding challenges designed to push the boundaries of their creativity and technical skills. The event underscored the potential for technology to solve real-world financial access problems.
