Rasmus Hojlund struck deep into stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw for a struggling Manchester United against a 10-man Bournemouth side on Sunday. The late equaliser prevented a third consecutive Premier League defeat for Ruben Amorim's team in a match overshadowed by a contentious red card decision.

Antoine Semenyo had put the home side ahead in the first half at the Vitality Stadium, compounding the woes for a United team searching for stability. The pivotal moment arrived in the 70th minute when Bournemouth forward Evanilson was initially shown a yellow card for a tackle on Noussair Mazraoui.

However, after intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), referee Peter Bankes controversially upgraded the punishment to a red card. Replays suggested Evanilson may have slipped before making contact, leaving the Bournemouth players and fans incensed.

Down to ten men, Bournemouth battled resiliently as the clock ticked towards the end of the nine minutes of added time. Just as it appeared they would secure a valuable victory, Manchester United found a lifeline. Luke Shaw's cross was flicked on by Manuel Ugarte, and Hojlund was on hand to poke the ball home from close range, snatching an unlikely point for the visitors.

The draw offers some respite for Amorim, whose tenure at Old Trafford since replacing Erik ten Hag in November has been far from smooth. Under the Portuguese coach, Manchester United have managed a mere six Premier League wins and are on course for their lowest points tally in the Premier League era. They also face the prospect of their worst league finish since their relegation in 1973-74, currently languishing in 14th place.

While the late equaliser prevented further embarrassment, the overall performance from Manchester United was hardly convincing. With rivals Liverpool poised to potentially secure their 20th English league title later on Sunday, moving level with United's historic tally, the contrast in fortunes between the two clubs is stark. Manchester United last lifted the Premier League trophy in 2013, and the current focus at Old Trafford appears to be on securing a top-five finish next season rather than challenging for the title.

Amorim has publicly stated he has "no regrets" about taking the Manchester United job, despite the difficult circumstances. However, the team's struggles continue, and their last hope for a positive end to the season lies in the Europa League, where they face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final first leg on Thursday. A significant improvement in performance will be required if they are to overcome the high-flying Spanish side.

Earlier in the match, Amorim made five changes to the side that lost to Wolves the previous week, with Luke Shaw deployed in an unfamiliar central defensive role. Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho had shown glimpses of promise in the first half, but it was Bournemouth who drew first blood.

A defensive mix-up involving Shaw and Patrick Dorgu allowed Evanilson to flick the ball to Semenyo, who finished clinically for his 11th goal of the season. Garnacho had a chance to equalise, but his shot was well saved by Bournemouth keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, while Dango Ouattara struck the post with an audacious effort. Ultimately, it took Hojlund's late intervention to salvage a point for Manchester United in a match filled with drama and controversy.
