The ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games 2024, is proving to be a significant catalyst for economic activity in Ogun State, injecting a much-needed boost into the coffers of food vendors and other small business owners. As the festival firmly entrenches Ogun State on the global sporting map, a vibrant commercial landscape has emerged, stretching from the bustling MKO Abiola Sports Complex to the Alake Sports Centre and the Babcock University Hostel.

The surge in commercial activities underscores the substantial economic benefits that accompany hosting a major sporting spectacle like the National Sports Festival. For the Ogun State government, the financial rewards are already evident, with vendors contributing millions of naira in fees, flowing directly into the state's treasury.

Local entrepreneurs are particularly enthusiastic about the newfound prosperity. Mama Ibeji, a popular food vendor, shared her positive experience: "In the last four days, business has been booming, especially since Wednesday when most of the state contingents arrived in Abeokuta. Initially, when we started operations on Sunday, May 18, there were few customers. But by Tuesday, things picked up significantly. We hope events like this continue to come to Ogun so we can keep supporting our families." Her sentiment reflects the tangible impact of the festival on household incomes and livelihoods.

While the overall picture is one of burgeoning business, not all vendors have experienced an immediate surge in sales. A jewellery seller from Lagos, a veteran of previous National Sports Festivals in Abuja, Rivers, and Edo, expressed a measured outlook. "Ogun is no different," she remarked. "Business usually starts slow, but it picks up toward the end when athletes receive their allowances. I’m confident we won’t leave Ogun without making a profit." Her perspective highlights the typical ebb and flow of sales at such events, with a strong expectation of increased activity as the festival draws to a close.

As the Gateway Games 2024 progresses, the anticipation among vendors remains high. The continued influx of athletes, officials, and spectators is expected to further drive sales, reinforcing the broader economic impact of sports tourism in the region.

The festival serves as a powerful testament to how large-scale events can stimulate local economies, create opportunities for small businesses, and showcase the host state's capacity to organize and benefit from national-level gatherings.
