The world No. 1, who grew up just miles from the TPC Craig Ranch course, was at 12-under after sinking a 10-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th—his ninth hole of the day—breaking a tie with fellow University of Texas alumnus Jhonattan Vegas. Scheffler, who opened the tournament with a scorching 10-under 61 on Thursday, had made eight straight pars to start his round before capitalizing on the 18th with a pinpoint approach shot that landed within a few feet of the cup.
The delay came shortly after his eagle, with tournament officials halting play due to threatening weather. The region had already endured several hours of rainfall Wednesday, softening the course and setting the stage for a potentially weather-interrupted event.
Patton Kizzire and Will Gordon, who both fired opening-round 64s, were 2-under for their rounds and sat three shots behind Scheffler when play was stopped.
Rico Hoey, the early first-round leader and co-runner-up with Vegas at 8-under entering Friday, had yet to begin his second round with an afternoon tee time. Defending champion Taylor Pendrith was struggling, 2-over through eight holes in his second round and sitting at 2-under overall—teetering near the projected cut line.
Play will resume once conditions allow, with much of the field still needing to complete their second rounds as the tournament adjusts to the weather-related disruption.
