As preparations intensify for the 22nd National Sports Festival—popularly known as Gateway Games 2024—organizers are placing a bold spotlight on the intersection of science and sport with a landmark two-day Scientific Congress scheduled for May 19–20.

The congress, jointly organized by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), is designed to drive innovation in sports science and policy. Bringing together top-tier sports scientists, performance experts, researchers, and policymakers, the event seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world athletic practice.

Held under the theme of advancing performance through science, the gathering aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration across nutrition, physiotherapy, biomechanics, sports psychology, and injury prevention. With Nigeria’s growing ambition to compete on the global athletic stage, the Congress is expected to provide actionable insights to improve athlete training regimens, enhance recovery protocols, and safeguard long-term athlete health.

“This is more than a conference—it’s a strategic intervention,” said Dr. Ayo Omotayo, Director General of NIPSS. “Aligning scientific research with athletic preparation can transform how we develop talent, prevent injuries, and optimise performance across all levels of sport.”

The initiative signals a broader push to embed evidence-based methodologies into Nigeria’s sports ecosystem, especially as the Gateway Games continue to evolve into a premier national showcase of talent and competition.

By placing science at the core of the Games, the Congress underscores a future-forward vision for Nigerian sports—one that prioritizes innovation, health, and sustainable performance.
