More Than Just a Contract
Awoniyi recounted that despite Tems' financial difficulties, her sheer dedication and eagerness to formalize their working relationship deeply impressed him. It was this remarkable attitude that prompted a pivotal decision: instead of a standard managerial contract, he proposed forming a company together.
"There was something Tems did that made me say, 'I don't want to do a managerial contract with you, let's do a company,'" Awoniyi explained. He described how, after verbally agreeing to work together, he expected the usual delays and reluctance artists often exhibit when presented with formal paperwork. However, Tems defied expectations. "She was chasing me to sign my own part. And I have never experienced that before."
This unprecedented eagerness to commit legally resonated deeply with Awoniyi. "I was like, 'You don't mind signing paperwork? Hold on, let's not do this. You're someone I can rock with for life. Let's start a company.'" This bond of trust and mutual respect formed the bedrock of their partnership, evolving from a three-month friendship where professional collaboration was never even discussed.A Glimpse into Her Character
Awoniyi also recalled Tems' quiet presence during his podcast sessions with his cousin, where she would simply listen. It was during this period that her dire financial situation became apparent. "When I met Tems, she only had like 200 Naira in her account," he stated.
Despite her financial constraints, Tems displayed a remarkable generosity that further distinguished her in Awoniyi's eyes. He, owning a production company, would often buy food when he had money. Yet, Tems, with no discernible income, would still insist on ordering food for them. "Another thing that shocked me was that even though she didn't have money, she will order food for us," he marvelled. "So, I just realised that she is different from everyone I have seen in Nigeria."
This early insight into Tems' character—her drive, integrity, and selflessness—foreshadowed the global impact she would eventually achieve. It highlights that behind the fame and accolades lies a story of perseverance, raw talent, and a unique spirit that caught the attention of someone who believed in her potential, even when her bank account suggested otherwise.
