The Nigerian stock market opened June on a strong note, with the All-Share Index (ASI) closing at a historic 114,616.75 on June 5, 2025. This milestone capped a four-day winning streak and marked a 2.57% weekly gain, reinforcing investor confidence and driving year-to-date performance to 11.36%.
A Rally Driven by Market Heavyweights
This week’s market surge was powered primarily by a cohort of heavyweight stocks whose significant market capitalizations amplified their impact on the index. As these blue-chip stocks gained ground, they helped propel the ASI to record levels.
Importantly, market activity remained vibrant, with over 3 billion shares traded during the week—evidence of increased investor participation and a clear bias toward buying rather than profit-taking.
Stocks Posting Gains Under 10%
Leading the pack of heavyweight gainers was ACCESSCORP (₦1.23 trillion market cap), which rose 5.45% over the week. The stock posted its strongest performance on Thursday, gaining over 5% to close at ₦23.20.
GTCO (₦2.39 trillion) advanced by 4.55% to end the week at ₦70.05, while ARADEL (₦2.38 trillion) climbed 3.77% to close at ₦550.59. Banking giants UBA (₦1.47 trillion) and ZENITHBANK (₦2.08 trillion) added 3.75% and 3.57%, respectively, to settle at ₦36.00 and ₦50.75.
LAFARGE (₦1.38 trillion), one of Nigeria’s key cement producers, posted a modest gain of 0.88%, closing the week at ₦86.00.
Notably, most of these stocks recorded the bulk of their gains later in the week, particularly on Thursday. GTCO, however, stood out with strength earlier on, notching gains across Tuesday and Wednesday.
Big Movers: Gainers Above 10%
Outside the trillion-naira market cap range, OANDO surged 25.77% to close at ₦56.85, pushing its market capitalization to ₦706.7 billion.
FBN Holdings rose 17.60% to close at ₦29.40, lifting its valuation to ₦1.23 trillion.
Telecom behemoth MTN Nigeria (MTNN) posted one of the most influential gains of the week, rising 13.96% to ₦319.20. With a market cap of ₦6.70 trillion, MTNN’s performance had a significant pull on the broader index.
International Breweries also delivered a strong showing, gaining 12.89% to close at ₦10.95, increasing its valuation to ₦1.84 trillion.
Market Outlook: Momentum with Caution
This week’s performance reaffirms the Nigerian market’s capacity for broad-based rallies, with strong buying interest in both large- and mid-cap stocks. While the ASI’s 11.36% year-to-date return remains well below its 2024 peak of 37.65%, investor sentiment appears buoyant.
If current market conditions persist—and the rallying stocks are not seen as overbought—the index may well continue its upward trajectory in the coming weeks. However, analysts warn that any short-term pullback could offer new entry opportunities for investors keen to buy on the dip.
As the market finds fresh momentum, all eyes will be on whether the rally can be sustained—and potentially broadened—even further
