Benue State’s Christian community is in mourning following the death of popular gospel musician Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, known by his stage name New Jerusalem. He passed away at the age of 53.
Mourning in the Gospel Community
New Jerusalem was widely respected for transforming Tiv Swange music into a vibrant vehicle for gospel outreach. His music inspired countless believers, both within and beyond Benue State, earning him a reputation as one of the region’s most influential gospel artists.
His passing has drawn heartfelt tributes across the state, particularly among those who cherished his commitment to using indigenous cultural sounds for Christian ministry.
Former Governor Ortom Leads Condolence Visit
Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the late singer’s family residence in Makurdi. He was accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group, underscoring the strong communal and spiritual ties New Jerusalem had built over his career.
Describing Ikyereve as a “devoted Christian,” Ortom praised his far-reaching influence:
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” the former governor said. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”
Ortom recalled witnessing Ikyereve’s music featured during an international programme in Australia, where a Tiv man taught music with New Jerusalem’s songs playing in the background—a moment he cited as clear evidence of the artist’s global impact.
He offered prayers for the bereaved family and pledged continued support for them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, vowing not to abandon them after the burial.
Family Expresses Gratitude
Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, elder brother of the deceased, spoke on behalf of the family, expressing deep gratitude for Chief Ortom’s unwavering support during the late singer’s illness and in the period following his passing.
He also revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in honour of the former governor’s compassion and involvement in their lives.
Prayers and Support from the Community
During the condolence visit, prayers were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr Joseph Antyo, both leaders of the Brethren Prayer Group, reflecting the strong spiritual fellowship that surrounded the late gospel artist.
New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, fellow gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, their four children, and several other relatives.
Burial Arrangements
According to the family, his burial has been scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
His passing marks the end of a remarkable era in Benue’s gospel music scene, but his songs and legacy are expected to continue inspiring generations to come.
