Crafting Laughter in Disguise: How Ghanaian Skit Maker IAM_ALMED Found His Voice Through a Female Persona
Behind the makeup, wigs, and exaggerated mannerisms lies a story of creativity, grit, and calculated risk. For Mohammed Ali, widely known as IAM_ALMED, his journey to becoming a global online sensation wasn’t paved with instant likes or viral fame—it was a process built on trial, error, and the bold decision to channel his comedic voice through the character of a woman.
Born in Ghana, Mohammed’s foray into content creation began in 2020 amid the global lockdowns. Like many others during the uncertain period, he turned to social media not only as a coping mechanism but also as a window to reinvent himself. But stepping into the skit-making space was no smooth ride. “When I started, I had low interactions. I didn’t even know what my niche was,” he reflected. “Then I took time to study the audience—what they laugh at, what catches their attention—and I found my path.”
His breakthrough came when he embraced the character of a woman—an idea rooted in his observation that female traits often carry a rich comedic texture. “The whole idea of dressing like a lady was because women have funny characteristics. I knew I could bring that out perfectly,” he explained. This wasn’t just a costume choice; it became his signature.
But behind the wigs and comic personas is a disciplined content creator who took time to learn the ropes. A fellow skitmaker and close collaborator introduced him to the dynamics of TikTok, especially the technical aspects of video editing. “We didn’t go to dance school. We just created our own style and stuck to what the audience enjoyed,” he noted, referencing their humorous routines and Bollywood-inspired twists.
Still, content creation has its pressures. Mohammed admits that the demand for constant output often leaves him with little personal time. “Millions of people are waiting for your next post,” he said. “It’s tough, but the rewards—recognition, money, and a growing fan base—keep you going.”His story is one of resilience. After finishing Senior High School with a certificate from the West African Examination Council, job opportunities were scarce. With little support and no initial approval from his parents, he started making videos in secret. “They only found out when they saw me on TV. But instead of being upset, they were proud,” he recalled. Today, his family is actively involved in his projects—his mother, sister, and brother all play roles in his creative journey.
Reflecting on his progress, IAM_ALMED is both proud and hungry for more. “I’m proud of how far I’ve come because content creation isn’t easy. I fought for relevance. I fought for popularity. But I’m not done yet,” he said. With dreams as lofty as a space tour and aspirations to reach even broader audiences, he remains focused on his core mission—entertaining people with unmatched creativity.
For IAM_ALMED, laughter is serious business. And while his characters may be fictional, the dedication behind them is nothing but real.
