Speaking on The Goldroom with Iyabo, the actress described how the case deeply resonated with her, revealing that she had been molested multiple times in the past. This personal history, she said, fuelled her anger and determination to speak out in defense of the minor involved and to support Princess, who was instrumental in pursuing justice.
“I really didn’t control my emotions then because I was outraged by what happened,” she said. “I think it’s because I was also coming from that part, where I had gone through whatever she went through multiple times... and I just felt like enough is enough—we need to start speaking out for the girl and boy child.”
Iyabo Ojo also expressed disappointment at how some adults, including industry colleagues, sought to distort the narrative around the case and attack both the victim and Princess. She described this reaction as evidence of the long journey Nigeria still faces in protecting children and addressing sexual abuse honestly.
“I was taken aback when I saw adults manipulating the story and even coming for the child and Princess,” she said. “That made me know we have a long way to go in Nigeria.”
The actress emphasized that entertainers bear a responsibility to model good values and set an example for society. She argued that those in the public eye should be held to higher ethical standards, particularly when it comes to protecting vulnerable people.
“You’ll notice when I kick, I kick when my fellow entertainers do wrong, because I feel like we are supposed to do right by our people,” she said. “That’s why we are entertainers. We are also evangelists because if we’re playing a bad role something bad must happen to the person playing the bad role. We cannot be preaching and doing the same bad thing that we’re telling people is wrong.”
Iyabo Ojo’s comments offered a candid reflection on her outspoken stance during the controversial case, underscoring her commitment to advocating for victims of abuse and challenging what she sees as harmful silence and complicity within the entertainment industry.
