Access Holdings Plc has confirmed the appointment of Mr. Innocent Ike as its substantive Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, effective August 29, 2025. The announcement follows regulatory approval and signals a new phase for the financial services conglomerate.

Transition After Interim Leadership

Mr. Ike’s appointment comes after Ms. Bolaji Agbede successfully steered the group in an acting capacity for 18 months, following the tragic passing of former Group CEO, Herbert Wigwe, in 2024. Agbede now returns to her previous role as Executive Director, Business Support.

The company’s chairman, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, described the appointment as a milestone in the group’s leadership journey. “We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Innocent Ike as we move forward,” he said, noting that the decision reflects the board’s commitment to stability and long-term growth.

Regulatory Compliance and Board Reshuffling

The leadership announcement coincided with another major development—the resignation of Roosevelt Ogbonna from the board of Access Holdings. His exit was in compliance with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Corporate Governance Guidelines for Financial Holding Companies (2023), which stipulate that no more than nine directors can serve on the board at once.

Although stepping down as a Non-Executive Director at Access Holdings, Ogbonna will continue in his current role as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, the group’s flagship banking subsidiary.

In a corporate filing signed by the company secretary, Sunday Ekwochi, the board praised Ogbonna for his service, stating: “The board appreciates Mr. Ogbonna for his outstanding and continued contributions to the Access Group.”

A Seasoned Banker at the Helm

Mr. Ike is not a stranger to the banking industry. With decades of professional experience, he has worked across several facets of financial management and corporate leadership. His elevation to the top role is expected to strengthen Access Holdings’ position as one of Africa’s leading financial services groups.

Industry analysts say Ike’s appointment also reflects Chairman Aig-Imoukhuede’s ongoing efforts to consolidate leadership within the group after Wigwe’s death, ensuring both continuity and compliance with regulatory expectations.

Broader Leadership Changes

The changes at the top follow a series of board adjustments at Access Holdings in recent months. Earlier this year, another senior director, Seyi Kumapayi, also stepped down from the board, underscoring the company’s efforts to align with evolving governance requirements while refreshing its leadership structure.

With Ike now officially at the helm, Access Holdings is entering a critical period as it looks to deepen its footprint across Africa and beyond, while navigating regulatory demands and an increasingly competitive financial services landscape.
