The main auditorium of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos recently became a place of remembrance, as Air Peace hosted a deeply moving Night of Tribute for five of Nigeria’s celebrated sports heroes — Moses Effiong (MON), Charles Bassey (MON), Christian Chukwu (MFR), Obisia Nwakpa (Golden Gloves), and Peter Rufai (MON), fondly remembered as “Dodo Mayana.”

Curated by football legend Dr. Segun Odegbami (MON), popularly known as The Mathematical, the evening brought together bereaved families, former teammates, sports stakeholders, and dignitaries to celebrate the achievements and sacrifices of these national icons.

The programme combined heartfelt speeches with music and memory. The Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, was in attendance, alongside respected clergyman Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, who delivered a touching sermon interwoven with vivid recollections from Nigeria’s sporting history. Air Peace’s Chief Operating Officer, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Olajide, also joined a gathering of prominent figures from the sports and corporate sectors. Soulful renditions by iconic vocalist Yinka Davies gave the event a stirring, nostalgic atmosphere.

In an emotional address, Air Peace Chairman Dr. Allen Onyema reaffirmed the airline’s dedication to honouring those who brought glory to the nation. He described the departed athletes as patriots who played for honour and love of country at a time when rewards were uncertain or non-existent.

Onyema shared personal memories of the late Charles Bassey and Peter Rufai, expressing regret over opportunities missed to further support them while they were alive. He also revisited the poignant history of Nigeria’s 1976 Olympic team — athletes recalled home on the eve of the Montreal Games as part of the country’s anti-apartheid stance, only to face neglect on their return.

The evening served not only as a memorial but also as a reminder of the need to preserve the stories of those who built Nigeria’s sporting heritage, often at great personal cost. For Air Peace, it was another demonstration of its ongoing commitment to national pride, unity, and the celebration of excellence.
