What began as a routine flight boarding at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on August 5, 2025, quickly escalated into a national talking point. Renowned fuji icon Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 de Ultimate or KWAM 1, was filmed in a tense altercation with ValueJet airline officials.
The viral footage showed the singer in close proximity to the aircraft’s wing just before take-off — a scene that sparked widespread outrage, prompted swift government action, and eventually led to a six-month flying ban.
Regulatory Response and Legal Hurdles
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), alongside the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, condemned the act, suspending the involved pilots and initiating a formal petition to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s spokesperson, made it clear that the authority lacks the legal mandate to prosecute KWAM 1 directly. “We have referred the case to the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation, who are better positioned to determine and communicate the next steps,” he told Saturday Beats.
Public Backlash and the Singer’s Defence
The online storm intensified when speculation arose that KWAM 1 had attempted to obstruct the aircraft’s departure while under the influence of alcohol.
Addressing these claims in a personally signed statement, the singer explained that he suffers from chronic dehydration and often carries a flask for water. “Contrary to the negative narrative… the flask I carried on that particular day contained only water, not alcohol,” he stated, insisting that CCTV footage could verify his account.
The Apology and Plea for Understanding
In a video circulated on Friday, the veteran performer tendered an unreserved apology to the Presidency, the Ministry of Aviation, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), NCAA, ValueJet, and fans worldwide.
“I would never do anything to tarnish the image I’ve built over the past five decades, nor would I knowingly act in a way that could diminish the reputation of the country I love so dearly,” KWAM 1 said, reaffirming his patriotism and role as a cultural ambassador.
