From Sapele to Lagos: Roots and Risks
Born Nelly Toritseju Baradi in Sapele, Delta State, her sound is steeped in the soulful harmonies of church choirs and the cultural rhythms of her hometown. But it was her leap to Lagos in 2018 that transformed ambition into audacity. “Sapele grounded me. Lagos stretched me. That contrast shows in my music. My sound is both home-grown and forward-facing.”

For years, her voice was everywhere but her name wasn’t. She cut her teeth as a background vocalist for stars like Timaya, Mohbad, and Seyi Vibez, honing her craft behind the scenes. “That was my training ground. Adding harmonies under their leads taught me restraint, intention, and presence. It showed me music isn’t just about sound — it’s about feeling.”
That quiet apprenticeship prepared her for the moment she could step into her own spotlight. “Watching them hold space so boldly made me think: maybe I can do this too… but in my own way. ‘Wake Up’ is what came from that quiet confidence.”

Her sonic identity blends Afrobeat grooves, R&B sensuality, and gospel-rooted harmonies. She describes it as “soft yet fearless” — shaped by the influences of Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and Tiwa Savage. “Every song starts as an emotion begging for air. I layer harmonies like emotions — some loud, some subtle, but all intentional. Every song has to breathe and bleed.”
