Sony is set to raise the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by approximately $50 starting Thursday, as the company contends with a slow recovery in the video game market and the potential impact of new U.S. tariffs.

Price Hike Across All PS5 Models

All three PS5 models will be affected by the increase, with the premium PS5 Pro expected to retail for $749.99. The announcement was made in a company blog post on Wednesday, emphasizing that the adjustments only apply to the U.S. market. Sony confirmed that prices in other regions, as well as the cost of PS5 accessories, will remain unchanged.

Tariffs and Global Supply Chain Concerns

The price adjustment comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on imports from major manufacturing hubs, including China and Japan. Analysts have warned that such measures could disrupt supply chains and drive up material costs, contributing to higher retail prices for consumers.

Sony is not alone in adjusting its pricing strategy. Earlier this year, the company raised PS5 prices across several European markets, and rival Microsoft’s Xbox also increased prices for consoles and accessories in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and the U.K.

Market Growth Faces Headwinds

Consoles were expected to be a key driver of growth in the video game sector this year, thanks to the release of major titles such as Take-Two Interactive’s highly anticipated “Grand Theft Auto VI” and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, rising console prices and the delay of “GTA VI” into next year have cast uncertainty over the industry’s growth trajectory.

As Sony navigates these challenges, gamers in the U.S. will face higher costs for the popular PlayStation 5, raising questions about the broader impact of tariffs and market shifts on the video game ecosystem.
