The global recognition places Dr. Tijani alongside leading technology figures such as Elon Musk and Sam Altman, underscoring Nigeria’s growing presence in the international AI landscape.
According to a statement from the Minister’s Media Office in Abuja, the TIME list highlights “leaders, innovators, shapers, and thinkers” whose work is advancing AI and its impact across industries and societies. To compile the list, editors and reporters at the magazine reviewed major AI developments over the past year and sought input from industry experts and thought leaders.
Dr. Tijani’s inclusion was attributed to Nigeria’s strategic strides in AI development, particularly through the National AI Strategy (NAIS), which convened more than 120 experts of Nigerian descent to co-create a long-term framework for responsible AI adoption. The minister has also championed research and pilot initiatives exploring AI applications in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and financial inclusion.
With support from international partners including Google and the Gates Foundation, the ministry has been backing local innovators to scale up mature AI solutions, offering resources, mentorship, and funding aimed at translating ideas into measurable impact.
Responding to the recognition, Dr. Tijani said the honour affirms Nigeria’s potential to play a leadership role in the responsible and inclusive deployment of AI.
“This recognition from TIME further validates our belief that Nigeria can stand as a global leader in the responsible and inclusive deployment of AI for increased productivity,” the minister stated. “My commitment remains clear: to ensure AI not only drives innovation but also contributes to building a $1 trillion economy as envisioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
The development, observers say, not only boosts Dr. Tijani’s global profile but also reinforces Nigeria’s ambition to harness AI as a driver of economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
