Music executive Ubi Franklin has publicly dismissed social media rumours accusing him of stealing a luxury wristwatch while attending singer Davido’s wedding in Miami, United States.
The allegations surfaced midweek after a blog post suggested Franklin was linked to a theft incident during the high-profile celebration. The speculation quickly spread across online platforms, prompting Franklin to issue a statement.
Franklin: “I Am Not a Thief”
Addressing the matter on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Franklin described the reports as “false and misleading.”
“I am currently aware of the recent circulation on social media linking my name to an alleged theft. I wish to make it clear that these allegations are completely false and misleading,” he wrote.
The Wristwatch Transaction
Franklin explained that while in Miami, he was approached by a man identified as Benny, who initially offered to sell him a wristwatch.
“After reviewing the item and confirming its previous ownership, I decided not to purchase it in order to avoid any potential complications,” Franklin said, adding that he had made his decision clear to the seller.
However, during the wedding church service, Benny sent another wristwatch through his brother. According to Franklin, he purchased this second watch and paid for it in full.
“Given the busy circumstances surrounding the wedding, I was in possession of both wristwatches and wore the one he sent to me through his brother,” he clarified.
Timeline After the Wedding
Franklin noted that he left Miami immediately after the wedding to return to Nigeria for his sister’s funeral. While airborne, he was contacted by Benny regarding the initial wristwatch that had not been purchased.
He stressed that he never intended to keep the item and reiterated that payment was made for the wristwatch he eventually acquired.
“I want to state clearly: I am not a thief. I have never stolen from anyone in my life. I purchased a wristwatch and paid in full from Benny,” Franklin said.
He also pointed out that Benny himself had debunked the theft claims earlier in the day.
“Difficult and Sensitive Time”
Calling the controversy “an extremely difficult and sensitive time” for him and his family, Franklin said the issue has added unnecessary strain as he prepares for his sister’s funeral.
He added that this would be his final comment on the matter, urging the public to disregard false narratives.
