Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has announced a ban on the long-running tradition of “examination orchestration,” commonly known as “signing off,” among final-year students. The decision, which takes immediate effect, was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the institution’s Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke.

According to the statement, the prohibition became necessary following repeated incidents of chaos, violence, and disruptions linked to the celebratory practice. The university noted that these events, which often involve large gatherings of students and outsiders, have in recent years escalated beyond control, undermining the safety and order of the campus environment.

“Effective immediately, all forms of orchestration (‘signing off’) related to final examinations by final-year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the university premises,” the Registrar stated.

The institution explained that the presence of unauthorised individuals during such celebrations posed significant risks to students, staff, and property. To this end, management has warned that any student caught engaging in the banned activity faces disciplinary sanctions, including rustication, while external participants may be arrested and prosecuted for disorderly conduct.

Dr. Okeke further emphasized that the university’s foremost duty is to protect life and ensure a conducive academic atmosphere. She added that management would no longer tolerate practices that compromise the welfare of the campus community.

The Registrar also called on students to prioritize their academic responsibilities and report any misconduct or threats to safety to the appropriate authorities.

With this move, UNIZIK joins a growing number of Nigerian universities taking steps to curb celebratory activities that have, over time, morphed into unruly and sometimes violent gatherings, sparking concerns about student safety and institutional order.
