Global pop sensation Ed Sheeran is preparing to release his latest studio album, Play, on Friday, marking the singer-songwriter’s eighth full-length project. The announcement comes as the 34-year-old also teases an upcoming United States tour.

Play follows Sheeran’s 2023 album Autumn Variations and continues a career that has spanned more than a decade of worldwide success, with chart-topping singles such as Shape of You and Perfect cementing his place among the most successful artists of his generation. He remains the sixth most-streamed artist on Spotify, while Shape of You remains one of the platform’s most listened-to tracks globally.

Sheeran has described Play as deeply personal, noting that it was inspired by a difficult chapter in his life. “I made this album as a direct response to the darkest period of my life,” he revealed, explaining that he wanted to “create joy and technicolour” out of those experiences. The project was recorded in multiple locations around the world, eventually wrapping up in Goa, India.

The release is also part of a broader artistic vision. Earlier this year, Sheeran told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that he has plans for a four-album series titled Pause, Rewind, Fast-Forward, and Stop. These will follow his earlier collection of mathematically themed albums, including Plus, Multiply, Divide, Subtract, and Equals.

Beyond music, Sheeran has been making headlines for his relocation plans. While he confirmed he will temporarily move to the US with his family due to his tour schedule, he clarified that he is not leaving the UK permanently.

“I’m not moving, I’m going on tour with my family and relocating to the continent I’m touring on. Don’t wanna commute from London to San Diego obvz,” he posted on Instagram, adding, “This isn’t a tax thing—I’ll always pay tax in the UK.”

Sheeran’s live calendar is already filling up. He will perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on September 20, before embarking on a European leg later this year and continuing to New Zealand and Australia from December 2025 through March 2026.

With Play on the way, Sheeran is signaling a new creative chapter—one that blends personal renewal with the global reach that has defined his career so far.
