The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) has initiated research efforts aimed at developing a vaccine for Lassa fever, a viral haemorrhagic illness endemic to the country. The announcement was made by IHVN's executive director, Alash'le Abimiku, who revealed that the institute is currently collaborating with two different groups on potential vaccine candidates. This move comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with the public health challenges posed by the recurring outbreaks of the disease.

Understanding the Virus for Effective Vaccine Development

Abimiku explained that a key part of the research involves studying the Lassa virus's characteristics. The institute is working to understand how the virus strains change over time, the habits of the rodent that carries it, and the differences between the viruses. These insights are critical for developing a vaccine that can be broadly effective.

According to IHVN's findings, while the virus does mutate, the strains across Nigeria remain largely similar. This is promising for vaccine development, as a single vaccine could potentially work against the dominant strains throughout the country.

A Broader Strategy for Combating Viral Threats

The announcement of the vaccine research coincided with details about IHVN's forthcoming scientific symposium, themed "Combating Viral Threats through Public Health Response and Research." The event will focus on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and how they can be applied to other viral threats like cholera, diphtheria, and Lassa fever. Abimiku stressed that understanding viral patterns and implementing effective policies are crucial for preparing for future outbreaks.

A Call for Increased Local Investment in Medical Research

IHVN's CEO, Patrick Dakum, used the platform to call for greater government investment in medical research. He noted that Nigeria's over-reliance on foreign funding is a significant vulnerability, especially as international grants for scientific research are shrinking. He urged the government to allocate a minimum of 20% of its healthcare budget to research to help the country achieve breakthroughs and control future outbreaks.

IHVN's chief operating officer, Charles Mensah, echoed these concerns, highlighting how reduced international funding has already affected research efforts. He mentioned that the institute is exploring new partnerships with private pharmaceutical companies and continuing to engage with international donors. Beyond vaccine development, IHVN is also collaborating with the government to strengthen research integrity and ethics in the country.
