Popular gospel artist and worship leader, Pastor Nathaniel Bassey, has opened up about the personal trials his family endured behind the scenes of his globally followed online worship programme, the Hallelujah Challenge.
Speaking during the ongoing October 2025 edition of the worship session, Bassey revealed that his wife, Sarah, suffered five miscarriages, including an ectopic pregnancy, while he continued to lead worship night after night.
The singer, known for songs such as Imela and Onise Iyanu, said the painful experiences occurred at different points over the years—even during periods when the Hallelujah Challenge was live and drawing thousands of worshippers from across the world.
“My wife will have to forgive me,” he told participants during one of the midnight sessions. “There were times during the Hallelujah Challenge when we had a miscarriage and nobody knew. I would still come online to praise and dance. A few years ago, she was in the hospital with an ectopic pregnancy. I would lead worship, then go straight back to the hospital where she was being treated. The nurses would say, ‘It was powerful tonight.’ Not one, not two, not three or four, but five pregnancies.”
Despite the private pain, Bassey said the experience deepened his faith and strengthened his ministry, showing him that God’s grace remains sufficient even in moments of loss.
The October 2025 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge—a 25-day online worship marathon—runs from October 7 to 31, with daily sessions streaming live from 11:59 p.m.
Nathaniel and Sarah Bassey have been married since 2013.
