To commemorate the 60th birthday of renowned Nigerian architect and Managing Director of Design Genre Limited, Anthony Okoye, the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), in collaboration with the Ife Architecture Students’ Association (IFASA) of Obafemi Awolowo University and Design Genre Limited, has launched a national architectural design competition aimed at fostering creativity and sustainable thinking among Nigeria’s emerging architects.

Themed “Reimagining the Urban Block of Nigerian Cities,” the competition invites architecture students from across the country to propose forward-thinking, environmentally conscious, and socially relevant design solutions for Nigerian cities. The initiative challenges participants to rethink how density, liveability, and practicality can coexist in rapidly growing urban environments.

According to the organisers, the competition is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate architecture students enrolled in Nigerian universities. Each team—comprising up to five members and including at least one urban or regional planning student—is required to select a representative urban block, such as those in Ebute Metta, Yaba, or Lagos Island, and present a detailed redesign. Submissions must include two A1 boards in PDF format showcasing site analysis, a master plan, key drawings, 3D visuals, and sustainability strategies, alongside a written report of 1,000–1,500 words explaining the design concept, challenges, and approach.

Winners will share ₦3 million in prize money, with ₦1.5 million for first place, ₦1 million for second, and ₦500,000 for third. Registration began on September 28, 2025, while entries close on November 30, 2025. Jury deliberations will take place on December 10, and winners will be announced on December 15, 2025. Participation is free and open via a Google Form link.

Speaking on the collaboration, the Honorary General Secretary of the NIA, Chike Ibeanu, described the competition as a vital link between academic innovation and professional practice.

“The NIA is proud to be part of this initiative that connects academic creativity with professional relevance,” he said. “Competitions like this nurture innovative thinking and help shape a new generation of architects who understand the complexities of Nigerian urban spaces and are committed to building resilient cities.”

Also commenting, IFASA President John Ojo described the contest as both a celebration of Anthony Okoye’s milestone and a tribute to his lasting influence on architectural education in Nigeria.

“Architect Okoye has been a consistent pillar of support for design competitions at OAU for well over a decade,” Ojo noted. “His global experience, spanning Europe, North America, and Africa, has inspired students to think critically about architecture and sustainability. His commitment to environmentally responsible design continues to challenge young professionals to create spaces that are both innovative and future-ready.”

Anthony Okoye is celebrated as one of Nigeria’s leading voices in sustainable design and urban development. An alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, he is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), a Trustee of the Green Building Council of Nigeria, a Member of the Institute of Directors, and a former Treasurer of RIBA-USA (Philadelphia chapter).

The nationwide competition not only honours Okoye’s six-decade journey in architecture but also underscores a shared vision—to inspire the next generation of Nigerian architects to create resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban futures.
