Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, Onyema addressed concerns over the rising cost of flights, comparing Nigerian fares to international standards.
“Nigerians are paying the cheapest domestic air fares in the world,” Onyema said. “A one-hour flight costs over $400 abroad, but in Nigeria, we still have tickets for N125,000, which is less than $60.”
He further explained that the domestic airline industry faces significant operational pressures, contributing to a high failure rate among carriers. “This is why the mortality rate of airlines in Nigeria is very high; over 80 airlines have come and gone. They should allow airlines to breathe,” Onyema added.
His comments come amid growing debates over the affordability and sustainability of air travel in Nigeria, highlighting the challenges of balancing accessible fares with the financial viability of local airlines.
