A new chapter has begun for the Colorado Rapids following the appointment of Matt Wells as the club’s head coach, ending a near two-month search after the departure of Chris Armas.

The Major League Soccer side confirmed the hiring on Tuesday, bringing in the 37-year-old Tottenham Hotspur assistant to lead the team ahead of the new season. Armas was dismissed after two campaigns in charge, with the Rapids opting for a fresh direction after missing out on the MLS Cup playoffs.

Wells arrives in Colorado with significant top-level European experience, having spent more than two seasons on Tottenham’s first-team coaching staff. His résumé also includes time working within Spurs’ academy system, where he was involved in developing young talent for elite competition.

Rapids President Pádraig Smith praised the appointment, highlighting Wells’ exposure to high-level football and his tactical credentials. According to Smith, Wells’ experience in the Champions League, Europa League, and Premier League, combined with his emphasis on player development, aligns with the club’s long-term ambition to compete for trophies.

Wells expressed enthusiasm about taking on his first head coaching role in MLS, describing the move as a significant but well-considered step in his career. He noted that while leaving a club competing in the Champions League was not an easy decision, the vision and project presented by Colorado made the opportunity compelling.

The Rapids struggled for consistency during the 2025 campaign, finishing with an 11-15-8 record and narrowly missing out on a postseason berth. Wells is now tasked with revitalizing the squad and steering the club back into playoff contention, with expectations that his European experience and winning mentality can help elevate Colorado’s standing in the league.
