In a recent interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus revealed that his father originally wanted him to become a lawyer. After failing to gain admission to study law, he enrolled in Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, where he discovered his passion for comedy.
“It was on campus that I discovered skit making and decided to try it out,” Sabinus said. “At first, money wasn’t coming, and my dad had no idea I was pursuing comedy. I had to hide it from him.”
He recounted that his father only learned about his comedy career a year after graduation, when he started seeing Sabinus featured on show posters. His sisters confirmed the revelation, prompting his father’s furious reaction.
“He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” Sabinus recalled.
Despite his father’s initial disapproval, Sabinus has since become one of Nigeria’s most popular comedians, demonstrating that following one’s passion can ultimately overcome family expectations and societal pressures.
