Nearly a decade after its theatrical release, Mad Max: Fury Road is set to disappear from Netflix later this month. Fans of George Miller’s post-apocalyptic epic will have until December 31 to stream the 2015 action thriller before it exits the platform.

The film, the fourth installment in the Mad Max franchise, stars Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. Nicholas Hoult also returns in a supporting villainous role. Set in a desert wasteland where fuel and water are scarce, Max and Furiosa must unite to overthrow the tyrannical warlord Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Their rebellion sparks high-octane chases across the desert and sets the stage for a dramatic confrontation that could reshape the remnants of civilization.

Upon release, Fury Road became the highest-grossing film in the franchise, earning over $380 million worldwide. It garnered ten Academy Award nominations at the 88th Oscars and won six, solidifying its place in modern action cinema. Critics and audiences alike praised the film’s blend of relentless action and strong narrative depth. On Rotten Tomatoes, it maintains a 97% critics’ approval rating and an 86% audience score, reflecting near-universal acclaim.

The film’s popularity also paved the way for a franchise spin-off. In 2024, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hit theaters, with Anya Taylor-Joy portraying a younger Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as the warlord Dementus. Several original cast members reprised their roles, expanding the lore of Miller’s post-apocalyptic universe.

Looking ahead, Miller has expressed interest in continuing the series with Mad Max: The Wasteland, although he has indicated that the project is not an immediate priority. Despite the promise of further stories in the Mad Max universe, fans may need to wait while Miller focuses on other endeavors.

For those who want to revisit the desert wasteland or experience it for the first time, Mad Max: Fury Road leaves Netflix on December 31.
