Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has conducted an on-site inspection of the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as part of the Federal Government’s initiative to elevate the facility to full international status. The exercise included members of a Federal Government Technical Committee tasked with fast-tracking the airport’s upgrade.
According to a statement from Keyamo’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, the delegation was divided into three technical groups to inspect the terminal building, the aerodrome and control tower, and the runway and airside facilities. Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State coordinated the visit to ensure a smooth and well-organized inspection.
“The inspection exercise, coordinated under the leadership of the Minister, included a high-level delegation comprising the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Yakubu Kofarmata; Director General of the NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo; Director of Air Transport Management, Ahmed Tijani; Director of Aerodrome, Engr. Godwin Balang, alongside other senior officials,” the statement read.
At the conclusion of the visit, Minister Keyamo and the team expressed strong satisfaction with the quality and pace of work delivered by the Akwa Ibom State Government. The airport’s design and infrastructure were particularly praised for supporting seamless domestic and international passenger operations.
The statement highlighted that the airport’s ultra-modern terminal, along with its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, reflects world-class standards. The upgrades position Uyo as an emerging aviation hub capable of improving connectivity, attracting investment, and fostering economic growth.
Minister Keyamo also disclosed that a technical committee has been constituted to oversee the remaining phases of the project. He directed members to mobilize on-site starting the first week of January 2026 to accelerate all outstanding work required for the airport’s full international operational status.
The inspection underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and promoting regional economic development through strategic investment in air transport hubs.
