The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has called for collective global action to address pollution and climate change, highlighting the importance of initiatives that promote a safer environment for public health.

Okonjo-Iweala made the remarks on Monday in Umuahia during the commissioning of electric buses procured by the Abia State government. She commended Governor Alex Otti and his administration for pioneering the launch of electric buses in Nigeria and expressed optimism that other states would follow suit.

“One of the biggest challenges the world faces today is pollution and climate change,” Okonjo-Iweala said. “Even though Africa contributes only three percent of global carbon emissions, all of us must contribute to a better climate for the world.”

Governor Otti, in his address, described the introduction of the electric buses as a step toward a zero-emission future. He highlighted that the vehicles were designed to accommodate the needs of Persons Living with Disabilities and can cover 400 to 450 kilometers on a full charge.

The governor also announced that the buses would provide free transportation for Abia commuters from December through early January 2026 on designated routes. He revealed that the buses are equipped with special cameras to ensure passenger safety by monitoring and recording any unlawful activity.

The launch underscores Abia State’s commitment to sustainable transportation and positions it as a pioneer in environmentally friendly public transit within Nigeria.
