Nigeria’s Super Eagles saw their Africa Cup of Nations hopes end in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night, falling 4-2 on penalties to Morocco after a goalless semi-final that stretched through 120 minutes of tense football.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock in regulation or extra time, despite periods of dominance from Nigeria and a series of clear chances for Morocco. The match was ultimately decided from the penalty spot, where Morocco’s composure proved decisive.

The defining moment came when Moroccan forward Youssef En-Nesyri calmly converted the winning penalty, sending Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali the wrong way. Earlier in the shootout, Nigeria suffered a double blow as Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi saw their efforts saved by Morocco’s goalkeeper Bono, whose heroics ultimately tipped the balance.

Nigeria’s successful spot-kicks came from Paul Onuachu and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, but they were insufficient to overturn Morocco’s advantage.

During the 120 minutes of play, the Super Eagles showed resilience and tactical discipline, with Victor Osimhen spearheading the attack before being substituted late in extra time. Despite periods of control, Nigeria struggled to convert opportunities, while Morocco created the clearer chances and repeatedly tested Nwabali, who produced several crucial saves to keep his team in contention.

Although the result is a bitter disappointment for Nigeria, their performance drew praise for determination and organization. Yet once again, penalties proved to be the cruel decider in the knockout stages.

Morocco now advance to the AFCON final, while the Super Eagles will face Egypt in the third-place match.
