As Nigeria prepares for its Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 encounter against Mozambique in Morocco, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has spoken about the role his Christian faith has played in shaping his life and career.

The Fulham centre-back told reporters that his belief in Jesus Christ had been a source of strength during difficult periods, describing it as central to his personal journey and resilience.

“Jesus is my personal Lord and Savior; He saved my life and helped me so much,” Bassey said. “I have been through hard periods and it has been something I have been able to hold on to.”

The defender did not go into detail about the challenges he faced, but emphasised that his faith provided stability and direction during testing times.

On the pitch, Bassey has emerged as a key figure for Nigeria at the tournament, cementing his place in the squad under head coach Eric Chelle. His consistent performances in defence have contributed to the Super Eagles’ progress to the knockout stage.

Nigeria will face Mozambique on Monday night as they look to advance further in the competition, with Bassey expected to play a central role in the team’s bid for continental success.
