In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Burkinabè Football Federation said the team’s performance at the tournament in Morocco fell “far below the objectives set for the national team,” triggering the decision to overhaul the technical bench.
Burkina Faso were eliminated in the round of 16 after a 3–0 defeat to defending champions Ivory Coast. The federation said the result caused “deep disappointment among supporters, stakeholders in national football, and governing bodies.”
Officials noted that the target ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was to reach at least the semifinals, reflecting the team’s recent competitive record. “This objective was clearly defined before the start of the competition, in line with the positive momentum and respectable performances achieved by the national team in previous editions,” the statement said.
The Stallions also exited at the last-16 stage in the previous Africa Cup, although they reached the semifinals of the 2021 tournament, where they were knocked out by eventual champions Senegal.
While announcing the dismissals, the federation thanked Traoré and his staff for their service since taking charge in 2024. It added that immediate steps would be taken to begin the process of appointing a new coaching team.
With Burkina Faso having failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attention now shifts to preparations for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
