The Super Eagles’ exit from the African Cup of Nations semifinals on Wednesday did not only dash Nigeria’s hopes of a continental title but also left several Nigerian celebrities counting financial losses after failed bets on the team.
Afrobeats star Davido was among those affected, having lost a $50,000 wager placed on Nigeria to defeat Morocco. Hours before kickoff, the singer had shared his bet slip on social media, backing the Super Eagles to overcome the Atlas Lions in the highly anticipated clash.
The encounter ended goalless after regulation time, before Morocco edged Nigeria 4-2 in a penalty shootout in Rabat, sealing the hosts’ place in the final and rendering Davido’s bet unsuccessful.
Similarly, popular Nigerian TikToker Peller also expressed frustration after losing a $3,000 bet, which he placed on Nigeria to win the match within 90 minutes. Speaking during a livestream on Wednesday night, Peller reacted sarcastically to the outcome.
“Thank you Super Eagles for playing very well,” he said. “I have lost my $3,000 bet. You guys were playing well in previous games before I decided to place a bet and watch your match.”
He further joked about his influence on the team’s performance, adding, “Maybe if I stop watching your games, you will start playing well again.”
The reactions have since sparked conversations online, as fans reflect on the Super Eagles’ campaign and the growing trend of public figures sharing betting activities around major sporting events.
