Mexico’s national soccer team snapped a troubling six-match winless run with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama Thursday in an international friendly that served as part of its buildup to this summer’s World Cup. The only goal came in the 92nd minute when Panama defender Richard Peralta inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing El Tri their first win since lifting the Gold Cup last July.

In a match that drew extra attention for its roster of dual-nationals, two American-born players made their first appearances for Mexico. Midfielder Richy Ledezma, born in Phoenix to Mexican parents, completed a one-time FIFA nationality switch after previously representing the United States in official competition and started the match, playing the full 90 minutes.

Chicago-raised Brian Gutiérrez, born in Berwyn, Illinois, also debuted for El Tri after featuring only in United States friendlies — which under FIFA rules did not tie him permanently to the U.S. — and exited in the 57th minute. The pair were joined by Obed Vargas, another U.S.-born midfielder, as coach Javier Aguirre sought to broaden his World Cup-era options.

Speaking after the match, Aguirre praised the newcomers’ contributions and underscored their potential value to the squad ahead of the global tournament, saying they “deserve respect” for choosing to represent Mexico and showing promise in their first outing.

Gutiérrez reflected on his debut positively, noting that the minutes on the pitch were a step forward in his development with the national team.

The victory not only halted Mexico’s winless streak but also provided a morale boost and fresh faces for Aguirre’s squad as they fine-tune preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host.
