Nigeria have emerged as the tournament’s most prolific side so far, scoring 12 goals — the highest tally by any team in the competition. This attacking output marks a clear shift from the team’s approach at the 2023 AFCON, where the Super Eagles, under former coach Jose Peseiro, relied heavily on defensive solidity rather than free-flowing offence.
The goals have been spread across the squad, underlining the team’s depth and versatility. Seven different players have found the net, with Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman accounting for half of the total goals. Raphael Onyedika has contributed two goals, while Wilfred Ndidi, Paul Onuachu, Akor Adams and Semi Ajayi have each scored once.
Osimhen’s form has been particularly eye-catching. His brace against Mozambique not only helped Nigeria’s progression but also moved him within three goals of equalling Rashidi Yekini’s long-standing record as Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer — a mark that has stood for 28 years.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel reflected on Nigeria’s performances in Morocco and highlighted Osimhen, Lookman, Ndidi and Alex Iwobi as standout performers.
“I really want to see Victor Osimhen be the top goalscorer because he deserves it,” Mikel said. “Ademola Lookman as well, playing really well.” He described both attackers as being “completely on fire” during the tournament.
Mikel reserved particular praise for Iwobi, noting that the midfielder has finally delivered the level of performance many have long expected from him on the international stage.
“Alex Iwobi has been really amazing in this tournament. I’ve been looking forward to this from Alex Iwobi for a long time,” he said. “Finally, we get to see the Alex Iwobi everyone is familiar with — performing well, everything flowing through him, making good chances, and delivering those passes.”
He also highlighted the importance of Wilfred Ndidi’s role in the team, describing the Leicester City midfielder as a stabilising presence.
“Of course Ndidi, who is the captain and the key player in the team, helps keep everything balanced,” Mikel added.
With momentum building and goals coming from multiple sources, Nigeria now turn their attention to a high-profile quarter-final clash against Algeria on Saturday, as they continue their pursuit of a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title.
