The north London club confirmed the deal on Wednesday, with British media reporting the transfer fee at around 40 million euros ($46.5 million). While Spurs did not disclose the contract length, the agreement is understood to run until 2031.
Gallagher, 25, joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 after departing Chelsea, a move widely linked to the London club’s need to comply with the Premier League’s tightened financial regulations. His switch back to England sees him join one of Chelsea’s fiercest rivals, adding further intrigue to the transfer.
“I’m so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club,” Gallagher said after completing the move. “I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same. It was very easy, it happened very quickly and I’m ready to get on the pitch.”
Tottenham’s interest in Gallagher comes at a time of mounting injury problems in midfield. Rodrigo Bentancur has recently been sidelined, joining an absentee list that already includes James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus. Spurs reportedly moved quickly for Gallagher amid competition from fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.
Head coach Thomas Frank praised the signing, describing Gallagher as a proven and versatile addition. “Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad,” Frank said. “He is still young and has plenty of room for improvement, but he also brings huge experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team.”
The move could also revive Gallagher’s international prospects. His last appearance for England came in a June friendly against Senegal, and he was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s squads for matches in September, October and November. A strong second half of the season at Spurs could put him back in contention ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
An academy graduate at Chelsea, Gallagher joined the club at the age of six and rose to become vice-captain before his departure. He left Stamford Bridge shortly after representing England at the 2024 European Championship and was midway through a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid at the time of his transfer to Tottenham.
